It is also known as Moenckeberg medial calcific sclerosis, calcific medial sclerosis of Monckeberg, and Mönckeberg's arteriosclerosis (also written Monckeberg's arteriosclerosis).
General
- Usually of no clinical consequence.
- May impact vascular assessments using ultrasound.[1]
Microscopic
Features:[2]
- Medial calcification (purple irregular stuff on H&E -- calcium phosphate).
Note:
- Lumen unaffected.
- It has been suggested that it usually involves the internal elastic lamina.[3]
DDx:[4]
- Atherosclerosis (severe) - intimal hyperplasia with stenosis, calcifications typically in tunica intima.
