The spermatic cord is occasionally seen by pathologists.

Overview

Contains:

May contain:

  • Müllerian-like remnants - ciliated columnar epithelium with basal nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm.[1]

General

Microscopic

Features:

  • Sperm - small darking staining ovoid bodies.
    • The tail is generally no seen in light microscopy.
  • Histocytes +/-intracytoplasmic sperm.[4]
  • +/-Multi-nucleated giant cells.

Spermatic cord lipoma

  • Like lipomas elsewhere.

Spermatic cord varicocele

General

  • Left > right.[5]
  • Large varicoceles associated with infertility.[5]
    • Thought to be due to increased testicular temperature.

Clinical:[5]

  • Pain.
  • Mass.
  • Ipsilateral testicular atrophy.

Microscopic

Features:

  • Dilated vein.
