Laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx.

Introduction

The usual indication is high stage laryngeal cancer.[1]

Protocol

The specimen is a: [total larynx/laryngopharyngectomy].

Components:

  • Pharyngeal tissue (superior-inferior, left-to-right, anterior-posterior): ___ x ___ x ___ cm; integrity: [intact/disrupted].
  • Laryngectomy (superior-inferior, left-to-right, anterior-posterior): ___ x ___ x ___ cm; integrity: [intact/disrupted].
  • Thyroid gland [total/partial [left/right]]: (superior-inferior, left-to-right, anterior-posterior): ___ x ___ x ___ cm; integrity: [intact/disrupted]; appearance [including parenchyma].
  • Tracheal stoma: [describe/not present].

Tumour:

  • Location: [oropharynx,nasopharynx,hypopharynx,state laterality, supraglottis, glottis, transglottis].
  • Dimensions (superior-inferior, left-to-right, anterior-posterior): ___ x ___ x ___ cm.
  • Appearance: [polypoid,exophytic,endophytic,multifocal].
  • Extent of invasion: [epiglottis,aryepiglottic fold,arytenoid,trachea,vocal cords,other stuctures].

Soft Tissue margins:
