Wound healing is important in surgery and occasions discussed in pathology. It depends on local factors and systemic factors.

Local factors

These include:[1][2]

  • Size of wound.
  • Vascularization.
  • Presence of infection.
  • Etiology of wound.
  • Presence of foreign bodies.
  • Wound motion/tension.
  • Presence of neoplasm.[3]

Systemic factors

These include:[1]

  • Nutritional status.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Endocrine conditions - diabetes mellitus, excessive steroids.
  • Systemic diseases - Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
  • Systemic infection.
