Traumatic neuroma

Traumatic neuroma is a common hand and foot ditzel and grouped with the peripheral nerve sheath tumours.

These may simply be referred to as neuroma, a rather non-specific term that may be used to describe a number of different things.

General

  • Consequence of trauma - diagnosis requires history of trauma.
    • May mimic a cancer recurrence at the site of a surgery.[1]

Microscopic

Features:[2][1]

  • +/-Nerve - that was injured.
  • Grouping of disordered nerve fibre bundles in fibrous tissue (collagen) - key feature.
  • +/-Myxoid change.
  • +/-Axonal swellings (ovoid pink/purple blobs).

	- Consistent with neuroma.
	- Atherosclerosis, moderate.

Micro

The sections show disordered nerve fibre bundles in fibrous tissue.
