Diagnosis in short

Metastatic adenocarcinoma involving the kidney. H&E stain.

Synonyms renal metastasis, metastatic disease involving the kidney

LM malignant neoplasm - morphology dependent on site of origin, often glandular
LM DDx urothelial carcinoma, primary adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis, unclassified renal cell carcinoma
IHC PAX8 -ve (usually), vimentin -ve (usually)
Gross mass lesion - classically in cortex close to the glomerular vascular plexus
Site kidney

Clinical history +/-history malignancy
Symptoms +/-hematuria
Prevalence rare
Prognosis poor
Clin. DDx renal primary

Kidney metastasis, also renal metastasis, is a kidney tumour that arose elsewhere and spread to the kidney.

General

  • Rare.
  • History should be compelling.

Clinical:

  • +/-Hematuria seen in 12-31% of cases.[1]

Gross

  • Typically in cortex close to the glomerular vascular plexus.[2]

Microscopic

Features:

  • Malignant neoplasm - morphology dependent on site of origin and type.
