Hidradenitis suppurativa (abbreviated HS), also known as acne inversa,[1] is a benign skin condition.

General

  • Uncommon - <1% of population.[2]
  • Onset usually after puberty and before 40 years old.[3]

May be associated with:[1]

Gross

Features:

  • Location - classically intertriginous areas.[4]
    • Axilla, buttocks, groin, inner thighs, breast (inframammary fold).

Microscopic

Features:[3]

  • Apocrine ducts plugged by keratin and dilated - key feature.
  • +/-Bacteria and inflammation in the congested ducts.
  • +/-Fibrosis (late).

SKIN AND SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE, RIGHT AXILLA, EXCISION:
- DILATED APOCRINE DUCTS AND A FIBROTIC DERMIS WITH MILD CHRONIC
  PERIVASCULAR INFLAMMATION, SEE COMMENT.
- EPIDERMAL INCLUSION CYSTS.

COMMENT:
The findings are compatible with hidradenitis suppurativa.
