HELLP syndrome

HELLP syndrome is an uncommon pathology of pregnancy that is diagnosed clinically and is defined by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets.

General

  • Diagnosed clinically.
  • Pathologically not the same as severe preclampsia.[1]

Definition:

  • H = hemolysis.
  • EL = elevated liver enzymes.
  • LP = low platelets.

Microscopic

Features:[2]

  • Thrombotic microangiopathic vasculopathy.
    • In essence: severe hypertrophic decidual vasculopathy. (???)
