Acute esophagitis occasionally afflicits the esophagus.

General

• Benign.

Microscopic

Features:

• Intraepithelial neutrophils - key feature.
• Basal cell hyperplasia.
• No infectious agent identified - important.

DDx:

• Candida esophagitis.
• Herpes esophagitis.

Stains

• PAS-D stain -ve for fungal organisms.
• GMS stain -ve for fungal organisms.

ESOPHAGUS, BIOPSY:
- ACUTE ESOPHAGITIS.
-- NO FUNGAL ORGANISMS IDENTIFIED WITH PAS-D AND GMS STAINING.
- NO COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM IDENTIFIED.
- NEGATIVE FOR DYSPLASIA.
