Cellulitis is an acute inflammatory process of the dermis and/or subcutis due to an infection.[1][2] It is rarely biopsied.
General
Clinical features:[2]
- Swelling.
- Warmth
- Tenderness.
- Erythema.
Note:
- These are the classic features of inflammation (rubor, tumour, calor and dolor).
DDx (clinical):[3]
- Stasis dermatitis.
- lipodermatosclerosis.
- Contact dermatitis.
- Lymphedema.
- Eosinophilic cellulitis.
- Papular urticaria.
- Metastatic disease.[4]
- Deep vein thrombosis.[2]
- Panniculitis.[2]
Gross
Features:
- Swelling.
- Erythema.

Features:
- Neurophil predominant perivascular inflammation.[5]
DDx:[5]
- Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (idiopathic palmar-plantar hidradenitis).
- Urticaria - also has eosinophils.
