Sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma

Sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma (abbreviated sarcomatoid UC), also sarcomatoid urothelial cell carcinoma (abbreviated sarcomatoid UCC), is a rare variant of urothelial carcinoma.^[1]

General

Rare.^[1]
Aggressive >55% dead within one year of presentation.^[1]

Microscopic

Features:

Urothelial carcinoma (classic or recognizable variant).
Sarcomatoid differentiation - typically (undifferentiated) spindle cells.
- Approximately have 10% of heterologous elements,^[1] e.g. chondrosarcomatous differentiation, osteosarcomatous differentiation.

DDx:

Sarcoma - esp. those arising from the retroperitoneum.
