p40 an immunostain that is both sensitive and specific for squamous cell carcinoma. Like other "p" immunostains (e.g. p16, p63), it is a nuclear stain.
General
- Considered superior to p63 as it is more specific.[1][2]
- p63 stains a significant number of adenocarcinomas.
Staining
Positive
Negative
- Lung adenocarcinoma.
- Breast carcinoma.
- CK5 +ve breast carcinomas are typically p40 positive.[4]
- Prostate carcinoma.[5]
