Boston Bowel Preparation Scale, abbreviated BBPS, is a measurement of mucosal visualization, as it pertains to the bowel preparation.[1]

Scoring

The large bowel is divided into three segments:

  1. Right colon.
  2. Transverse colon with flexures.
  3. Left Colon.

Each segment gets a score of 0 to 3.

Scoring of the segments

Score Description
0 Unprepared
1 Segments not well seen
2 Minor fragments/obscuring material, but mucosa seen well
3 Colon segment well seen, no residual fragments/obscuring material

The three scores are added to get score from zero (horrible) to nine (awesome).
