Pack year, abbreviated py, is quantification of smoking.

NCI defines it as:^[1]

{\text{1 py}}={\frac {\text{1 pack}}{day}}\times {\text{1 year}}

Note:

1 packs per day for 40 years: 40 py

2 packs per day for 10 years: 20 py

3 cigarettes per day for 50 years: 3/20 * 50 = 7.5 py
