Traumatic neuroma is a common hand and foot ditzel and grouped with the peripheral nerve sheath tumours.
These may simply be referred to as neuroma, a rather non-specific term that may be used to describe a number of different things.
General
- Consequence of trauma - diagnosis requires history of trauma.
- May mimic a cancer recurrence at the site of a surgery.[1]
Microscopic
- +/-Nerve - that was injured.
- Grouping of disordered nerve fibre bundles in fibrous tissue (collagen) - key feature.
- +/-Myxoid change.
- +/-Axonal swellings (ovoid pink/purple blobs).
DDx:
- Morton neuroma (foot).
Images
- Traumatic neuroma (nih.gov).[1]
- Traumatic neuroma - several images (upmc.edu).
- Traumatic neuroma (sarcomaimages.com).
- Traumatic neuroma (nih.gov).[3]
- Neuroma (nih.gov).[4]

Submitted as "Neuroma Left Foot", Excision: - Consistent with neuroma. - Atherosclerosis, moderate.
Block letters
SOFT TISSUE LESION, RIGHT WRIST, EXCISION: - TRAUMATIC NEUROMA. - BENIGN FIBROADIPOSE TISSUE.
Micro
The sections show disordered nerve fibre bundles in fibrous tissue.
