Cellulitis is an acute inflammatory process of the dermis and/or subcutis due to an infection.[1][2] It is rarely biopsied.

General

Clinical features:[2]

  • Swelling.
  • Warmth
  • Tenderness.
  • Erythema.

Note:

  • These are the classic features of inflammation (rubor, tumour, calor and dolor).

DDx (clinical):[3]

Gross

Features:

  • Swelling.
  • Erythema.

Features:

  • Neurophil predominant perivascular inflammation.[5]

DDx:[5]

  • Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (idiopathic palmar-plantar hidradenitis).
  • Urticaria - also has eosinophils.
