Hepatitis is an inflammatory process that involves of the liver.
The term is used somewhat loosely when considered from the pathologist's perspective; inflammatory cells may be absent, such as in steatohepatitis. Clinically, transaminase elevation (elevation of ALT, AST) may be described as hepatitis.
