Syphilis is the infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum.
General
- Classically affects the testis before the epididymis.[1]
- Considered one of the TORCH infections.
Gross
Aorta:
- Wrinkled intimal surface - "tree bark" appearance.[2]
Microscopic
Features:
- Plasma cells - key feature.[3]
- Spirochetes - diagnostic.
- +/-Granulomas[4] - gumma - in the tertiary phase.[5]
