Pneumoconioses

The pneumoconioses group of lung disease caused by the inhalation of particulates.[1] They are often related to occupation.

Classification

Can be subdivided into fibrosing and non-fibrosis.[1]

Specific entities

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis

  • AKA coal workers' lung.

General

  • Exposure to coal dust.
  • Impact on respiratory function variable.[2]

Gross

  • Upper lung predominant.
    • Radiology identical to silicosis.[3]

Microscopic

Features:[2]

  • Anthrocosis - black pigment in the lymphatics and lymph nodes.
  • +/-Fibrosis
    • Contains black pigment.
  • +/-Necrosis.
