Esophageal ring

Esophageal ring is an uncommon pathology that afflict the esophagus. Schatzki ring redirects here.

General

Gross

  • Ring-like narrowing of the esophageal lumen.

Microscopic

Features:[2]

  • Inflamed squamous mucosa.
    • Occasionally columnar epithelium.

DDx:[2]

Note:

  • Histologic findings are nonspecific.

Submitted as "Mid Esophagus", Biopsy:
- Squamous mucosa with basal cell hyperplasia, focal papillary 
  elongation and abundant (predominantly basal) intraepithelial 
  lymphocytes, see comment.
- NEGATIVE for apparent eosinophils or neutrophils
- NEGATIVE for dysplasia and NEGATIVE for malignancy.

Comment:
The clinical history (Schatzki's ring) is noted; the morphology would be compatible with that (or GERD if more distal).
