Cystic medial degeneration

General

• AKA cystic medial necrosis.
  • Often not cystic and not necrotic.

Microscopic

Features:

• Basophilic ground substance in the media (see on Movat's stain).
• Disruption of the elastic lamina (seen on elastic trichrome stain).
• +/-Focal necrosis.
