Thyroid-like follicular carcinoma of the kidney, also thyroid-like follicular renal cell carcinoma (abbreviated TLF-RCC), is a recently described rare kidney tumour.

It is considered an emerging entity by the Vancouver modification of the 2004 WHO classification of renal neoplasia.[1]

General

  • Extremely rare - less than 15 cases reported in the literature.[1]
  • Large age range (29-83 years old).

Gross

  • Solid, brown and well circumscribed.

Microscopic

Features:[1]

  • Thyroid follicule-like structures - both microfollicular and/or microfollicular. **Contain dense-appearing eosinophilic material.
  • Encapuslated.
  • Nuclei round and regular with prominent nucleoli (ISUP nucleolar grade 2 or 3).

  • CK7 +ve/-ve.
