Synovial cyst

Microscopic

The section shows fragments of fibrous tissue, bone and cartilage with nesting of chondrocytes. A simple cyst lining of uniform cells is identified.

Diagnosis

SPINE, L4-5:
- SYNOVIAL CYST.

Vertebral disc

Microscopic description

The section shows fragments of fibrocartilage and nucleus pulposus demonstrating degeneration of the ground substance and clusters of chondrocytes.

Diagnosis

DISC FRAGMENTS, L3-4:
- DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE.
- NEGATIVE FOR MALIGNANCY.

Paraspinal tissue

Microscopic

The section shows fibrofatty tissue with cautery artefacts and a mild patchy lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate.

Final diagnosis

EPIDURAL SOFT TISSUE:
- SOFT TISSUE WITH MILD CHRONIC INFLAMMATION.
- NEGATIVE FOR MALIGNANCY.

Ganglion

Microscopic

Sections show degenerated ligament flavum and dense connective tissue. A smooth surface corresponding to the lining of a cyst is present, partially containing fibrin, but devoid of a synovial lining.

Final diagnosis

SPINE, L4-L5:
- GANGLION.
