Ascites is finding that has many causes.
Classification
- Clinical classification is usually based on SAAG and can be divided several ways.
- SAAG = serum albumin - ascites gradient; the concentration gradient between the ascites fluid and plasma.
- High SAAG, AKA "transudative", > 1.1 g/dL.
- Usually liver causes (cirrhosis, hepatic congestion).
- Low SAAG, AKA "exudative", < 1.1 g/dL.
