Carotid artery

Microscopic

Sections show an endarterectomy specimen containing a large eccentric atherosclerotic plaque with areas of necrosis and calcification. There is evidence of focal ulceration. No mural thrombus is identified.

Diagnosis

CAROTID ARTERY, RIGHT:
- ATHEROSCLEROSIS, COMPLICATED.

Notes

• Dissection is gross diagnosis (need entry & re-exit point).

Amputation

Diagnosis

Leg, right below knee amputation:
- Viable resection margin.
- Coagulative necrosis of toe.
- Severe complicated atherosclerosis with marked luminal stenosis and focal luminal obliteration (in plane of section) of the tibial arteries and dorsal pedis artery.
