Squamous metaplasia of lactiferous ducts, abbreviated SMOLD, is a benign change is in the breast.

General

  • Uncommon.[1]
  • Associated with smoking.[1]
  • Post-menopausal women.
  • May be associated with subareolar abscess.

Gross

  • +/-Nipple inversion.[2]

Microscopic

Features:

  • Squamous epithelium - replaces (bilayered) lactiferous ducts - key feature.[2]
  • Xanthomatous reaction.
