Navicular cell. Pap stain.

The navicular cell is a benign type of intermediate cell seen on Pap tests.

Navicular means boat-shaped.[1] Navicular cells have folded edges and can be imagined to be a boat that is seen from directly above.

General

  • Benign.
  • Associated with: pregnancy, contraception with medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-provera).[2]

Cytology

Features:

  • Intermediate cells with:
    1. Folded edges.
    2. Abundant cytoplasmic glycogen - central yellow.

Notes:

  • May resemble the lenses of coke-bottle glasses.
