General
- Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).[1]
- Clinical diagnosis.

Features:[2]
- Inflamed squamous mucosa.
- Occasionally columnar epithelium.
DDx:[2]
Note:
- Histologic findings are nonspecific.

Submitted as "Mid Esophagus", Biopsy: - Squamous mucosa with basal cell hyperplasia, focal papillary elongation and abundant (predominantly basal) intraepithelial lymphocytes, see comment. - NEGATIVE for apparent eosinophils or neutrophils - NEGATIVE for dysplasia and NEGATIVE for malignancy. Comment: The clinical history (Schatzki's ring) is noted; the morphology would be compatible with that (or GERD if more distal).
Block letters
ESOPHAGUS, BIOPSY: - SQUAMOUS MUCOSA WITH BASAL CELL HYPERPLASIA, INTRAEPITHELIAL EDEMA AND RARE INTRAEPITHELIAL EOSINOPHILS -- COMPATIBLE WITH GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX. - COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM WITH MODERATE CHRONIC INACTIVE INFLAMMATION. - NEGATIVE FOR INTESTINAL METAPLASIA. - NEGATIVE FOR DYSPLASIA AND NEGATIVE FOR MALIGNANCY.
