Skeletal muscle is a type of striated muscle under voluntary control.

Muscle biopsies are dealt with in the article neuromuscular pathology.

General

  • Common incidental finding on biopsies and resections.

Microscopic

Features:

  • Long fibres with striations - key feature.
    • Striations may be difficult to appreciate on cytology.
  • Peripheral nuclei.
