English: Intermediate magnification micrograph of papillary thyroid carcinoma tall cell variant. H&E stain.

Features that make it papillary thyroid carcinoma:

  • Irregularities of the nuclear membrane.
  • Nuclear grooves.
  • Nuclear enlargement.
  • Apparent overlapping of nuclear membranes on section.

Features that make it the tall cell variant:

  • "Tall cells" - cells where the largest dimension is 3x the smaller dimension.
  • Abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm.
  • Well-demarcated cell borders.
  • Lack of pseudostratification - is a significant differentiator from columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma.
