Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma, abbreviated PDTC, is a distinct type of thyroid carcinoma that is recognized in the 2004 WHO classification of thyroid tumours.[1][2] It does not refer to high grade thyroid tumours.[1]

General

Microscopic

Required features - so called Turin criteria:[4]

  1. Solid, trabecular or insular pattern of growth.
  2. Absence of nuclear features for (conventional) papillary thyroid carcinoma.
  3. One of the following:
    1. Convoluted nuclei.
    2. >= 3 mitoses/10 HPF.
    3. Tumour necrosis.
