An effusion is an abnormal fluid collection.
They can be grouped the following way:[1]
Type | Appearance | Clinical | Image |
Serous | clear | transudate (???) | [1][2] |
Serosaginous | somewhat cloudy | serous + blood | image |
Serofibrinous | appearance ??? | clinical ??? | [2][3] |
Purulent | opaque/yellow | infection (implies presence of PMNs); called empyema in plural space |
