Atypical spindle cell lesions of the skin are uncommon but seen with enough frequency that one ought to be familiar with them.[1]
Spindle cell lesions of the skin directs here.
Classic
The differential diagnosis of atypical skin spindle cell lesions is SLAM:
- Spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma.
- Leiomyosarcoma.
- Atypical fibroxanthoma.
- Malignant melanoma.
Extended
A longer differential diagnosis that includes lesions with less atypia is SLAM DUNK:
- Spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma.
- Leiomyosarcoma.
- Angiosarcoma.
- Malignant melanoma.
- Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).
- Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (AFX).
- Nodular fasciitis.
- Kaposi sarcoma.
